Best yarn for crochet bikini ?

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

Here is the question that we ask ourselves when we want to create a beachwear creation: "But which thread will I use?"

Do not panic, here I will give you the answer as well as my preference

Indeed, it is not enough to take any ball and a hook haha. There are different types of materials.

- animal fibers

- plant fibers

- synthetic fibers

Animal fibers

The fiber from an animal corresponds to what is called "wool". It usually comes from sheep, although wool from other animals is found. Among others, there is Merino (from Merino sheep from Spain); Mohair (from the Angora goat); Cashmere (from the Cashmere goat) and so on... It is a solid and warm fibre. So you understood it perfect for sweaters, we will not use it for making a swimsuit.

Vegetal fibers

Of course, the best known is cotton. There are also balls of flax, hemp and even bamboo! The advantage is that it is natural fibers which is better for the skin as well as for the environment. Cotton is also very durable.

Synthetic or chemical fibers

They are derived from petroleum. We distinguish acrylic, polyester, polyamide or elastane. The best known is acrylic which is very widespread and inexpensive.

IKKI advice

Most bikini crocheters use acrylic. Indeed, this material is not very expensive and the fiber is suitable for this use. However, as can be seen in the photo, the bottom ball is made of acrylic. And ? and it pills quite a bit.

Also, you can find yarn brands dedicated to beachwear creations. These marks are all made of synthetic materials. They provide elasticity and quick drying. There is in particular the famous brand ALIZE which offers the Diva Stretch range (acrylic + elastic). Apparently she's great.

For my part, I prefer to use a natural fiber. Thus, I opt for cotton which is the most widespread (so you will have no trouble providing it and it will be available in a multitude of colors). Also as you see in the photo, the fiber does not pill. It costs a little more than acrylic but the result is worth it.

My little thing? I use mercerized cotton. Mercerization is a process that makes cotton silkier and shinier.
